2010 Civil Partnership Act

The 2010 Civil Partnership Act (“Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Co-habitants Act 2010”) has significant tax and transfer implications, because it greatly increases the rights to co-habiting couples - previously, the co-habitant had no automatic rights regarding property, home protection, financial support or inheritance. This Civil Partnership Act applies to 'qualifying co-habiting couples' who are not married to each other or registered in a civil partnership, as well as same sex couples.
